in the glow: voluptuary

‘Voluptuary’ suggests the idea of growth and proliferation, which can be positive and sought-after, but alternatively feared and dreaded depending on context. In conceptualizing this work I sought to encapsulate the breadth of those realities by means of a seductively beautiful yet slightly menacing form. As a woman there are times in one’s life when bodily changes are welcomed and celebrated as signs of womanhood, yet the anatomy that most defines the gender binary is also subject to cancerous dangers that also engender growth.
In titling this work I ultimately settled on a blend of the words ‘voluptuous’ and ‘reliquary’.
This piece is featured in the exhibition ‘In The Glow’ at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California from September - December 2024.
