In the Glow: Growth
Growth, Industrial felt, wool, mixed media, 40 x 30 x 6 inches, 2024
To me this piece embodies both specific and general changes to the body— and how they can be interpreted in a positive or negative light, entirely depending on current circumstance. Which means that, too, can change. From the swelling of puberty to pregnancy to tumors, growth in the female gendered body can be rife with complicated responses. In this stitched sculpture I made hundreds of hand cuts to manipulate the integrity of smooth, firm, non-stretchy industrial felt to create a surface that could respond to the forms I inserted underneath, revealing life-force pink.
This piece is featured in the exhibition ‘In The Glow’ at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California from September - December 2024. This work is available to purchase, but must remain on view at the Triton Museum through the close of the exhibition. Shipping, pickup, or delivery can be arranged with the artist.
