In The Glow: Concatenary
Concatenary, industrial felt and mixed media, 40 x 30 x 3 inches, 2024
This piece plays with the manipulation of materials in simple but elegant ways that remind me of the human body. To 'concatenate' is to link items or ideas together in a series or chain; it seemed an apt title for a work in which a single wavy cut, when offset, causes new features to appear in the surface. The dimensional possibilities of a flat surface come to life through change, both subtle and dramatic. In the same fashion, aging skin, weight fluctuations and hydration levels are just a few of the life events that affect the appearance and functions of skin. For me, industrial felt encapsulates both the tender and robust qualities of our human interface with the world.
In this one-of-a-kind wall-hanging sculpture, soft curves and clean edges give a dimensional but graphically clean and precise form to showcase the everyday magic of reflected light and color. The pink ‘glow’ that appears along the curved dips of this piece may seem to be lit using electricity, but in truth the color comes only from ambient light bouncing off intensely pigmented panels.
This piece is featured in the exhibition ‘In The Glow’ at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, California from September - December 2024.
