In the Glow: Vessel
Vessel, wool and mixed media, 12.5 x 9 x 9 inches, 2024
The title 'Vessel' suggests the historical association of women as as givers of life-- but also empty forms to be filled by their duties and roles, passive recipients of attention, and dehumanized body parts. In an abstracted shape I can attempt to capture and embody that range of definitions and the ability for an object to stand for multiple meanings. In the same way, the female experience can engulf a myriad of realities within one day, much less a lifetime.
I created this sculpture by compressing, tangling, and shaping loose fibers into felt using hand-held felting needles.
