Pinkness Studies
In these one-of-a-kind wall-hanging sculptures I combine supple textiles, crisp design, and vibrant pigment to urge viewers to focus, pay attention, and contemplate.
“Pinkness Studies” are composed of slices of thick wool felt hand-sewn onto a square matrix over stretcher bars. Precise suture-like stitches contain and constrain the soft curves and clean edges. Different angled, upright, and ruffled configurations cause areas of intense fluorescent pink pigment to reflect soft pink light onto the white felt.
The color pink is central to these sculptures; I’m fascinated by the highly personal responses elicited by the variety of meanings associated with the tint. Pink can suggest opposing and disparate concepts about femininity, innocence, vitality, vulnerability, power and playfulness. Pink never seems to elicit a neutral response- it is a loaded color.
These disarmingly simple studies explore the way color and design can be both subtle and intense. Vision results from the brain processing light reflected off the world around us. With these sculptures I aim to draw attention to that fact by highlighting bounced colored light and directing the viewer to notice the controlled composition that makes the effect visible. I want to draw attention to the act of seeing and reacting to a familiar hue. I want to create situations in which everyday experiences are seen with a fresh view.
